Do you know what beverage I love more than coffee? Iced Coffee. So delicious. Seriously, the best part of sunshine is ice-cold coffee. Specifically cold brew coffee. I started drinking cold brew coffee almost 13 years ago. I started using this “fancy” Toddy Cold Brew System, but over the years different parts broke and I simplified to what you see below.
The recipe is simple… Take 340 grams of coffee coarsely ground. You can use any coffee you want but Her Royal Highness is my favorite with Lumberjack coming in a hot second. I highly recommend these paper filters,(UPDATE: there are other paper filters I’ve tried from amazon that are much cheaper that work just fine) because they make filtering and clean up a breeze. find a large pitcher or container drop the filter bag filled with coffee inside and add 1000 ml of water (about 34 oz), make sure all the grounds are wet. Wait 5 minutes and pour in another 1000 ml of water. Loosely cover (or not–but I don’t trust people in my house–falling objects). Wait 12-24 hours. Then I pull the bag out and place it over the pitcher in a colander, and move on with my life. Come back 10 mins-3 hours later and toss out the paper bag full of grounds. This is where you thank me, because without the filter, clean up becomes a frustratingly intense process.
Now you can be done… stick it in the fridge and forget about it. BUT if you want to bring it to the next level, go get 2 coffee filters. You can use the coffee pot basket or I use a wide mouth canning funnel because it’s faster. Pour the coffee through the double filters, this takes extra sediment out of the cold brew and makes it taste just that much smoother.
Now when you are ready to drink your cold brew, dilute the concentrate 50/50 with water then add milk or cream, sugar, chocolate syrup, vanilla, whipped cream. Whatever floats your boat. You can make it stronger or weaker to suit your own preferences. But beware cold brew coffee packs a real caffeine punch!
